Title: Leadership in Project Management – Raising and Empowering the Leader Within

In our highly competitive business environment, project managers must deal with more complex, more innovative, and more risky projects under increased resource and time constraints. This pushes their professional challenges beyond management and into leadership.

Good leaders have the capability to set and achieve goals by encouraging a culture of trust and collaboration. They have the subtlety to lead upward, the influence to lead downward, and humility to lead sideways. How can one master such capability and utilize their full leadership potential?

In this presentation, we will evaluate leadership in practical terms; examine who the real leaders are and what makes them so, as well as learn about methods used in management consultants' leadership training.

speaker Sy Aslan is a speaker, author, and business coach. Sy has over 30 years of business consulting experience serving as an advisor to managers and executives of Fortune 500 companies, helping them plan, execute, and sustain strategic and tactical goals.

Sy has developed and delivered workshops and seminars for individuals and teams to cultivate effective insights and innovative thinking, build creative and communication skills, and enhance leadership and decision-making abilities. He has delivered academic classes on management and decision-making subjects for executive MBA, graduate, and undergraduate programs, and has presented in numerous professional conferences and events.

Sy spent 25 years with UMT Consulting Group. In 2015, UMT was acquired by Ernst & Young, and with them Sy joined the E&Y Advisory team. Since 2018, at Aslander Group, Sy concentrates on writing and presenting on topics focused on decision-making, leadership, creativity, and communication.

Career Networking LCI

Topic: Solopreneurship for Plan B or a Working Retirement

Presented by: Beth Kujan and Paul Cecala

Start Time: 5:30 P.M.

Thinking you might want to freelance? This talk is for you! Have the perfect career? Woven into the talk is a fun thread for the casual listener.

Here's the main point: Whether by choice or fate, many project managers will end up as a solopreneur. Late stage capitalism hit Paul and Beth earlier than it did others. In response, we ended up as independent (solo) consultants. Bills were paid. What we have to offer is a practical talk about B2B consulting (what Beth does) vs B2C (Paul's business), LLC formation vs sole proprietorship, business insurance, etc.

speaker Paul Cecala, a Five O’Clock Club Certified Career Coach, has been coaching since 1999 and assisted over 3000 people in either changing careers or starting their professional lives. He has worked for several post-secondary career schools as Director of Career Services specializing in Biotech/pharmaceutical careers, Green Economy jobs, aviation, allied health, IT and general administrative professions. Currently, he the Director of Program Development for Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies where his responsibilities include identifying developing and managing many of the school's adult, non-credit programming. Additionally, he helped develop the job search training process for several NJ Department of Labor sponsored job search groups.

Paul has a BS in Psychology from Florida Institute of Technology. Prior to career coaching, he had a long career in corporate aviation sales. His final position in this arena was Vice President of Aircraft Charter Sales for a nation-wide industry leader.

speaker Beth is a classically trained materials scientist and an engineering project manager. She has been freelancing since leaving Bell Labs in 2008. Five (5) of the last 12 years were spent trying to launch an advanced materials start up. It was partially successful: she secured $1M+ in grants and paid evaluations from potential customers. Meanwhile, to pay the bills, she worked as a construction consultant for the insurance industry, as a subject matter expert in sustainability, and as a business analyst. Lately, she's been using her PMP at Bristol-Myers Squibb, formerly Celgene in Summit and in launching another business.
Remember to bring your business cards!
